A brief guide to Isuzu Troopers

Hi There, Recoverytim here. I run a small firm in Dorset called T.T.Transport. We specialise in Recovery and Vehicle Logistics.
For those of you looking to buy an Isuzu or Parts, this may help you:
MK1 Isuzus. These are the first, box-shaped Isuzus with square headlights, and commonly 2.8 diesel engine. Made from 1988 to early 1992. (F reg to H reg). You occasionally get a J plate which is a late registered vehicle manuafactured in early 1992 but not registered until the latter part of the year. Old but reliable, although they all seem to be rusting around now, especially the front x-members, wheel arches and behind the sills.
MK2 Isuzus. Made from 1992 to 1996, and these are the curvier shape with square headlamps, but are much more luxurious and nicer to look at. They come in 3.1TD engines and 3.2i V6 petrol ( which drink it majorly! ) The one thing to look out for is the crank pulley on the bottom of the engine, as this has to be removed for a timing belt change, and sometimes the bolt is either partly sheared in the crank or has been cross-threaded. The drivers window switches are beginning to become a rare part in our breakers shed as they are the ones which are used most frequently, and the contacts eventually give up.
MK2 FACELIFT. Similar in most respects to the MK2 but the interior is more modern and the controls are different. Instead of having the lights/wipers/hazards/dim contols on the dash the lights and wipers are on column sticks. The gearboxes are the newer style which are now fitted to MK3 troopers, but the exterior of the vehicle is exactly the same, apart from the grille, which is usually chromed or outlined, where as standard MK2 grilles are colour coded or just black. In 2005 there was a recall for the Ceramic Heater which Isuzu claim had a "long term safety implication" for ALL 3.1TD engines.
MK3 Isuzus. The "New" style Isuzu with a bull nosed bonnet and "angry" looking headlamps, as well as having a different shaped front bumper and extended plastic wheelarches. The rear number plate is now in the centre of the rear bumper instead of on the smaller of the 2 back doors, as per the MK2/MK2 FACELIFT. The new improved engine is the 3.0TD DOHC Common Rail. Very reliable and fantastic on performance, but make sure that it has had the Turbo Recall (around 2000) and an Injector and Injector seat recall (2004 ish). It is advisable to use a low oil such as 5w30 instead of standard 10w40 as it will make stating easier in the winter. (the common rail has to fill with oil before the engine will start, and 5w30 is thinner when cold!). These are still also available in 3.2i V6, but again drink the jungle juice!
And just to clarify..... UK spec vehicles are Troopers, and Imported vehicles from Japan etc are Bighorns. The main differences are that Bighorns have three main 'Models' but are essentially the same spec, but Troopers only have Duty or Citation. The Duty being the lower end model without twin heated seats, Air con etc, and Citation being top of the range.
I hope this has been a helpful brief guide, and if anyone has any technical questions or would like to ask a general question about Isuzus, I will be happy to try and help. See my ME page for details.
