2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Review

It's hard to go wrong these days if you're willing to spend well in excess of $100,000 on a luxury sedan. Take cars like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Maybach 57 and Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG for a spin and you'll find that there's really not a bad one in the bunch. This poses a challenge for luxury automakers, as it's difficult to stand out in such impressive company. Nonetheless, with the assistance of parent company Volkswagen, the 2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur pulls it off, offering up a distinctive combination of S65-like performance along with enough classic British luxury to rival the more sedate Phantom and Maybach.

Essentially a four-door version of Bentley's Continental GT coupe, the Flying Spur has sporting bloodlines that are readily apparent in its breathtaking power and athletic handling and braking. The twin-turbo W12 engine whisks the Flying Spur to a stratospheric top speed of 195 mph, making it the fastest four-door sedan currently in production. In braking tests from 60 to zero, the big Bentley repeatedly stopped in about 116 feet, which is more befitting a sports car than a luxury barge. It also weaved through our slalom cones at a brisk 65.1 mph, just 0.1 mph slower than the Continental GT coupe.

At the same time, the Flying Spur's lavish cabin is also world-class, with leather or wood trim adorning virtually every visible surface. Bentley says that installing said trim on the steering wheel alone requires five hours of labor -- and it feels like it, too. Some of the Volkswagen/Audi-sourced switchgear strikes us as a bit mundane for the Bentley brand, but it's certainly more functional than the company's interior bits of yore. And while the Flying Spur may not be able to match the sheer curbside presence of the imposing Maybach, let alone the downright intimidating Phantom, its elegant lines and proportions leave no doubt as to its ultraluxury credentials.

At a base price of $170,990, or roughly half that of the Rolls-Royce or Maybach, the 2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur is a compelling package. It might even be the closest thing to a bargain that this exclusive segment has to offer.

Kia Soul Burner

Are you ready for Kia to bare its Soul? Having built up a reputation for producing cars that are dependable, practical and great value for money, the fast-growing Korean brand is now set to turn on the style with this daring SUV-inspired supermini. The Soul was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last month as three distinctive variants, each demonstrating the potential for personalisation that the production model will offer when it goes on sale in 2009.

When the wraps were pulled off the three models on the stand at the Swiss exhibition, the Burner caught our eye in particular. So we went to Kia’s European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, for an exclusive first drive. Walking up to the Soul, it’s instantly clear that it doesn’t quite fit into the traditional supermini class. With its tall stance, upright rear and slightly raised ride height, it stands out from every other small car.

Look closer and you will spot the bulging wheelarches, sloping roofline and distinctive side window profile. To that, the Burner adds deep bumpers and matt-black paintwork, as well as red accents on the front grille, door mirrors, front indicator lenses and chunky 19-inch alloy wheels.

And to complete the ‘bad boy look’, a subtle, tattoo-style dragon graphic stretches asymmetrically down both sides of the vehicle. The best news for buyers, though, is that apart from the special bum-pers and tweaked front and rear lamps, this is the car you will see in Kia’s UK showrooms next year. All the sheet metal parts – such as the doors, wings and roof – have been signed off for production. And it’s a similar story on the inside of the Burner. Under the bold black and red leather trim lies the same cockpit the factory model will have.

The dashboard is well laid out, and the stereo and heating controls are mounted high in the centre console. There’s plenty of room for the four occupants – at 4,105mm long, the Soul is slightly bigger than supermini rivals. Neat touches inside include universal iPod connection, along with some clever storage ideas.

That’s not all. Turn on the sound system, and LEDs positioned behind the speaker grilles pulse to the beat of the music. But this is no concept car gimmick – the hi-tech feature will be offered as an optional extra!

The Soul is based on Kia’s all-new small car platform, which will also form the basis of a supermini-MPV, as well as the next-generation Rio. And although the model wasn’t in its final state of tune when we tried it, there is plenty of potential. The ride is composed, and the handling is agile, with precise and well weighted steering. Enhancing the driving experience is a high-set seating position and upright windscreen, which combine to give excellent visibility.

DUB Edition Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger

Sweet quarts of Pennzoil, why must every automaker jump on bandwagons they have no business being on? Chrysler, the reason people put DUB wheels and parts on their cars is to be unique and stand out from the crowd.

By partnering with DUB for the 2008 DUB Edition Chrysler 300 Touring and 2008 DUB Edition Dodge Charger SXT, you're missing the point. Now you have two underpowered cars, with largely unremarkable styling, and overblown Kicker sound systems that will be replaced anyway. Has at everyone Chryslerberus taken crazy pills?

Fiat 500 estate to take on Clubman

Here's a Fiat 500 that’s got a little bit extra – to boot! The Italian giant is setting its sights on the MINI Club-man with an estate version of its successful small car – and this is how it will look.
Our exclusive pictures reveal the spacious new city challenger, which will hit showrooms in 2010. As you can see, it won’t rely on gimmicks used by its MINI rival, so there are no rear passenger doors, just a practical tailgate.
The extended roofline boosts head-room in the back and frees up more luggage space, making this the most sensible 500 of the range. The compact estate is inspired by the small load-lugger from the Sixties, and could even carry the same Giardiniera badge worn by that model. Fiat will keep development costs to a minimum by using the same front end and wheelbase as found on the hatch. However, a slightly longer rear overhang, a more upright tail and a pair of neat alloy roof rails will set the new model apart.

The Giardiniera won’t be the first 500 estate to appear, though. Italian coachbuilding firm Castagna showed its vision of the load-lugging city car at the Geneva Motor Show last month.

The firm has a history of beating manufacturers at their own game, having designed a line-up of MINI estates before the Club-man was officially revealed.

The standard 500’s engine range will be carried over to the Giardiniera, so customers will get the choice of an entry-level 69bhp 1.2-litre petrol unit, a more power-ful 100bhp 1.4-litre or a 75bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel. Fiat is also believed to be considering a hot Abarth version of the estate if there is sufficient demand. However, the next 500 variant to appear on UK roads will be the cabriolet, as seen in the sketch below. This model is set to be unveiled at the 2009 Geneva expo and hit showrooms late next year.

Honda NSX to spearhead RWD model lineup

By most accounts, Honda originally planned to show off the next generation NSX to the seething throngs at last year's Tokyo Motor Show. But due to the less-than-positive reception the Advanced Sports Car concept garnered at the Detroit show, Honda's designers headed back to the drawing board to redesign the front clip housing the 550 hp, 4.5-liter V10.
Now, Autocar has gotten word from a Honda insider that the NSX is bound for the 2009 Tokyo show, sporting a new front end that "has Chevrolet Corvette undertones" and is slated to for production in the fall of 2010.

The new NSX will supposedly kick off Honda's first serious attempt at producing rear-wheel-drive vehicles to rival BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infiniti, including new platforms that will underpin Acura's larger sedan offerings and an S2000-based Acura sports car that takes aim at the Mercedes SLK. The launch of Acura's 7-series fighter isn't due to make an appearance until 2015. For Honda' sake, let's hope they can expedite development to make it happen around the turn of the decade.

2008 D3 Cadillac CTS

(from D3 Press Release) 2008 Cadillac CTS – D3 Performance Exterior Package
D3 Cadillac, the leader in Cadillac tuning, introduces the new 2008 Cadillac CTS Performance Exterior Package. The exterior enhancements are not only exquisitely designed styling cues integrated seamlessly, they are functional as well. The front grill has a unique jewel like cut on the stainless steel wire mesh that signifies performance & class. The additional openings in the front allow for a larger surface area to induce adequate cooling for the engine compartment. This is important when you start squeezing more performance out of this engine, as heat is a byproduct of making more power.
Not only were the factory brake ducts maintained, but the front fascia also introduces double the cooling by adding an additional brake duct pick ups on each side. Notice the angled lip towards the lower edge of the front fascia. This angled edge has been designed and measured for just the right amount of down force without creating too much drag. The side skirts offer a much more complete look and help transfer the styling from the front of the vehicle to the rear without loosing the theme of the design.

The rear deck lid spoiler and rear roof spoiler help introduce down force at high speed while keeping the air stable coming off the backside of the vehicle. The rear lower diffuser helps keep the air uniform while passing the underside of the vehicle. While at speed the air is kept moving uniform rather than curling up behind the vehicle, often promoting rear end lift at high speeds.

Lotus ‘Eagle’ Spied

Under the watchful eyes of Malaysian backers, Lotus has been undergoing a period of management stability allowing the company to reach its best. Recent rumours that the Malaysian-British joint-venture is gearing up to release another model seem to be true.

Snapped while undergoing handling testing in southern France, this picture show what we currently know as the Lotus “Eagle”.
Larger and more powerful than the Elise, the ‘Eagle’ will be powered by a mid-mounted 3.5-litre petrol engine borrowed from Toyota and driven via the rear wheels.

Little else is currently known about the engine, but we are keen to find out if it’s the same 200kW unit found in Toyota’s Aurion, RAV4 V6, Kluger, Tarago etc…

The mass-produced engine will ensure that the ‘Eagle’ will pass strict EU and US emission regulations.

The Lotus Eagle is rumoured to be heading for the British motor show in July this year.

2008 Abt Audi AS5

(from Abt Press Release) Unobtrusive design and powerful appearance - this is what the Abt AS5 stands for. With a discerning eye on the detail Abt enhances the elegant Audi Coupe with its breathtaking, pleasing contours and the stretched flanks. The team from Kempten has managed to upgrade the unique vehicle without changing its character. With the two coloured paint and the Abt body kit, the AS5 appears like a mannequin in an extravagant designer tailor-made suit. The front skirt, in which a grid element accents the front fog lights and the single-frame grill, the strikingly curved lateral parts, the fender insets and the gill-shaped air inlets form a shapely unit.
The Coupe is a unique and beautiful car, no matter from which perspective. The rear skirt inset with the diffuser excellently harmonizes with the 4-pipe rear muffler, together with the perfectly designed rear spoiler it accentuates the rear of the vehicle. As ideal complement, Abt recommends the new BR wheel in 20 inch. With its superposed spokes, the wheel seems to rapidly move forward although it is standing still.

The Abt AS5 is not only optically a real sports car. In Essen it is presented with the powerful 3.0 TDI engine which, thanks to Abt Power S, now brings 300 HP (221 KW) onto the road instead of the serial 240 HP (176 KW). The torque of 600 Nm is getting free at already 2400 rpm and provide for shear force in all situations. Also impressive is the acceleration of the self-igniting engine.

Exactly 5.3 seconds needs the car from standing still to 100 km/h, the top speed is 264 km/h - values which suit to a sporty Coupe like the Abt AS5. In order that the impressive power remains controllable, Christian Abt, motor sport professional, excellently adjusted the Abt thread sports suspension in detail. And the Abt brake system with discs 380 millimeters diameter powerfully grips.Abt multifunctional sports steering wheel, soft nappa leather grip and carbon look leather adorn the driver's workplace. Abt aluminium pedals and gear shift knob complete the sporty accent in the interior. A successful masterpiece can be seen at the ESSEN MOTOR SHOW, the Abt AS5. The only downside is: It wants to be driven and this, unfortunately, is impossible in the exhibition hall.

2011 Chevy Volt - spied

Chevy Volt passed from the vaporware stage into the physical manifestation of GM's efforts to bring the series hybrid to production as promised. Though what you're looking at is the body of a last-gen Malibu, we have confirmation that underneath is the Volt's E-Flex powertrain being track-tested for the first time, or at least the first time in front of a spy photographer's zoom lens. Of course, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the Volt, like whether or not GM will meet its self-imposed deadline of late 2010 for production, or if the price will continue to rise above the estimated $35,000 we've heard thrown around. What we do know is that the E-Flex powertrain will be paired with the next-generation Delta chassis. Two suppliers, Continental Automotive Systems and A123 Systems, are tasked with developing the Volt's all-important lithium-ion battery pack that has to achieve the difficult mark of allowing the Volt to operate for 40 miles on electric power alone. There's still a lot of work to do and not a lot of time left to do it, so it's good seeing GM finally driving the Volt around.

B MW M3 coupe by HAMANN

HAMANN has just released a tuning package for the V8-powered BMW M3 Coupe E92 that incorporates a series of mechanical and cosmetic upgrades. While the majority of us would be happy with a standard M3, HAMANN wasn't satisfied with a stock version, they offered two upgrades. The first tuning package increases the 4.0-liter V8’s output to 435 Hp and delivers an additional 25 Nm of torque (series: 400 Nm) on the crank shaft. With the removal of the speed limiter, the M3 can go up to a top speed of 300 km/h or 187 mph. The second kit called Sportkit HM/M +35 rises output to 455 Hp and toque to 448 Nm. In this case, the M3’s speedometer doesn’t stop until it reaches 320 km/h or 199 mph.

BMW M3 coupe -1BMW M3 coupe -2They upgrade the already perfect suspension and brakes. The car looks amazing until you see the spoiler, for me the spoiler kills it. I was so happy when I saw the car especially since I love black on black, with black rims but that spoiler is too much, but if I took the spoiler out this what be the nicest M3. Personally, I'd also limo tint and black out tail lights maybe, but awesome job HAMANN.

Chevrolet Malibu a Go, Despite Axle Strike

Nothing worse than losing your momentum, and that’s been a big worry for the folks at General Motors, as they watch the strike at American Axle approach the end of its second month.

The strike has already had a sill-over impact, notably for GM, Axle’s biggest customer. It has so far had to shutter all or part of 30 of its own factories, and there was growing concern that the automaker might be forced to halt production of its new and well-received 2008 Chevrolet Malibu sedan.

But while it looks like another strong GM product, the Chevrolet HHR, has also been hit by the American Axle dispute, the automaker will be able to keep Malibu up-and-running. “I don’t see anything changing, from where I sit,” said Bo Andersson, GM’s global head of purchasing, during a roundtable discussion. “We have a good plan,” Andersson hinted, to keep parts coming for the Chevy Malibu, which was voted North American Car of the Year, last January, and which has been one of GM’s strongest entries in the passenger car segment in recent years.

Lamborghini Murcielago SV - Spy Sots

We alerted you last week to the existence of the Lamborghini Murcielago SV, a rear-wheel-drive version of the normally all-wheel-drive LP640. Seen here undergoing some on-track testing, the SV will reportedly serve up some 680 horsepower from its Lambo V12 behind the seats. It will also be lighter than a normal Murcielago by 220 pounds. Clearly visible on the car is a new fixed rear wing that's either meant to assist in take offs or stabilize the car at high-speeds. Expect carbon fiber to be a common build material, as well. Those are all some potent variables for a formula that guarantees a fun time.

The Murcielago SV will be the latest in a string of new models from Lamborghini lately including the LP640, Reventon, Gallardo LP560-4, Gallardo Superleggera, among others. We're expecting the SV to debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, but judging from the spy shots in our gallery below, it looks ready now.

2008 Audi R10 TDI

(from Audi Press Release) Audi starts with diesel sportscars in Europe

Ingolstadt – AUDI AG enters the 2008 motorsport season and Le Mans Series (LMS) with a high-calibre driving squad and the most successful Le Mans team ever. Audi Sport Team Joest enters two of the latest generation Audi R10 TDI for Dindo Capello (Italy) and Allan McNish (Scotland) and Alexandre Prйmat (France) and Mike Rockenfeller (Germany) in every race of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) organised endurance championship.

For the first time since entering endurance racing exactly ten years ago Audi now contests a European based sportscar series as a factory team. "Previously the European fans have only been able to see the R10 TDI in action at the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "We are absolutely delighted that we have been able to create a base together with the ACO over the last few months which will see our diesel sportscars on the grids in the classical European 1000-kilometre races. The Le Mans Series already boasted an extremely attractive field last year. The Audi factory involvement surely will further increase the value of the championship.”

Audi Sport Team Joest enters two third-generation Audi R10 TDI prototypes in the Le Mans Series which will also compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 14/15 June 2008. Reinhold Joest’s team has been a reliable partner of Audi Sport for than ten years and has already scored five Le Mans wins and four American Le Mans Series titles together with Audi.

High-calibre drivers on the grid
Audi fields defending ALMS Champions Dindo Capello (43) and Allan McNish (38) in the fight for the championship title in Europe. With nine overall victories and two championship titles in succession, the two seasoned campaigners formed the most successful driver pairing in the ALMS over the previous two years. A strong duo also occupies the second cockpit: Alexandre Prйmat (25) and Mike Rockenfeller (24) contest the Le Mans Series parallel to their DTM programme. The youngsters impressed at the wheel of the R10 TDI in testing in 2007.

The season opener is held on 6 April at Barcelona (Spain). A total of five races are scheduled, including the endurance classics at Monza (Italy), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Silverstone (Great Britain) and at the Nurburgring (Germany). The venue of a possible sixth race is still to be confirmed.

2005 Maserati MC12

The Maserati MC12 is a rare beast. Only 25 were made in 2005 and just seven of those were federalized for use in the United States, one of which is this blue-and-white gem you see above. Similar to its brother, the Ferrari Enzo, the MC12 shares not only the Ferrari 6.0-liter V12, but the same hefty price tag, as well.

The current bid for this particular example is over $1,200,000 and still under the reserve. Originally owned by a collector in Florida, it is up for sale by Lamborghini of Las Vegas and only has 521 miles clocked on the odometer.
