Ferrari California - new production line

Production of the Ferrari California has commenced, and for the occasion a new assembly line has been inaugurated at Maranello. The program called “formula Uomo” (a play on words meaning “formula man”) started in 1997 and was designed to render the factory work more comfortable and streamlined for staff. A new futuristic restaurant has also been opened at the facilities.

In the meantime, the wait for the little one from Ferrari is becoming nervous and the photos and video are a terrible tease coming up to the Paris debut in October.

Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 in Brazil

Commanding one-two win for Volkswagen: At the Rally dos Sertões the factory duos Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz as well as Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford captured first and second place overall.

The cross-country rally through Brazil held new types of routes in store for both driver pairings and put drivers and co-drivers to the test with technically demanding terrain and difficult navigation. In addition to fast sections across service roads, slow, trial-like rocky passages and slippery mud, the rally’s profile featured extremely deep water passages. The highly demanding routes thus posed a new challenge for Volkswagen and the entire team.

After winning the prologue and clinching seven subsequent stage victories, Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz took the overall lead from the outset, with the Volkswagen drivers competing against seasoned local rivals. With three stage wins and consistently high speed, Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford constantly maintained contact to their team-mates. However, due to a 48-minute time penalty after a delayed start to the penultimate special stage, they were deprived of the chance to fight a direct duel with them. Nevertheless, the advantage of the factory teams at the finish was significant: In the end, after 4,500 kilometres, overall winners de Villiers/von Zitzewitz were three, and runners-up Miller/Pitchford two hours ahead of the third-placed local Mitsubishi team Reinaldo Varela/Marcos Macedo.

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera & Carrera S Coupe & Convertible

Stuttgart. Starting on 5 July, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is introducing the next generation of the 911 model series. The four new models – two Coupйs and two Cabriolets – with classic rear-wheel drive offer an even higher standard of dynamic performance thanks to their all-new flat-six power units displacing 3.6 and, respectively, 3.8 litres. And the introduction for the first time of direct fuel injection on a Porsche sports car, together with the optional double-clutch gearbox Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), makes the new 911 even more sporting and dynamic.

At the same time these new technologies enhance the already outstanding efficiency of the 911 to an even higher level than before: Featuring PDK, the Carrera Coupe offers outstanding fuel economy of 9.8 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 28.8 mpg imp. And with all new Carreras remaining significantly below the fuel consumption benchmark of 11 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 25.7 mpg imp, CO2 emissions are down by up to 15 per cent.

Maximum output of the 911 Carrera with its 3.6-litre power unit is up by 20 bhp to 345 bhp (254 kW). Output on the 911 Carrera S with its 3.8-litre power unit is equally impressive, up by 30 bhp to 385 bhp (283 kW). With this extra power, the Carrera S Coupй now offers a top speed of slightly over 300 km/h or 186 mph.

The new generation of the 911 is available for the first time with the new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox. Offering no less than seven forward gears, the new gearbox combines the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox. And since PDK also boasts an automatic gearshift function, it replaces the former Porsche Tiptronic S automatic transmission on both the Carrera and Carrera S. Through its optimised and adaptive gearshift programs, PDK improves the car’s acceleration and reduces fuel consumption to a level even lower than before.

Porsche developed this gearshift principle featuring two clutches to shift gears without the slightest interruption of traction and pulling power and without even the slightest break in between gears no less than 25 years ago for motorsport. Porsche works drivers benefiting from this technology were able to accelerate faster than their competitors and keep both hands on the steering wheel while shifting gears, thus avoiding even the slightest distraction while shifting.

Prices start at Euro 69,600.- for the Carrera (Euro base price). The Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera S both retail at Euro 78,000.- (Euro base price), and the Carrera S Cabriolet is entering the market at Euro 88,000.- (Euro base price).

Mazda3 – Next generation

The Mazda3 has been a compact darling ever since its introduction in 2004, and even though its current design is nearly five years old, it still wins many comparison tests. Since its near the end of a design cycle, a new Zoom Mazda is on its way, and some interesting renderings have been published online of what the new Mazda3 could look like.

The design theme is decidedly Mazda6-based up front, with similarly angled LED headlights and the same basic shape, but this unofficial Mazda3 is far more "in your face." The large front air dam looks more like something from the MazdaSpeed collection, and its large opening doubles as the Mazda3's grille. The side view features clean, flowing lines and the same basic shape as the current Mazda3 hatch. Out back, football-shaped LED tail lamps give this rendering a touch of class, and the similarly-shaped in-set dual exhaust looks like a concept-only touch. Due to the surprising success of the current model, the next Mazda3 has to be very, very good or it will be a big disappointment. If the next 3 looks as good as these renderings, we wouldn't be disappointed at all.

2008 Edo Competition Lamborghini Gallardo SLE

(from Lamborghini Press Release) With the modified Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Edo Competition Motorsport has now added a second high-profile Italian racer to its tuning program after the Murcielago LP 640. Like its bigger brother, this sports car with the bull in its logo excels through its highlighted racing genes and more aggressive appearance after being modified at edo competition.

The most remarkable feature is the sensational acceleration. Edo Competition achieves these figures thanks to the installation of a massive air box, high flow catalytic converters which are a completely new design and a recalibration of the engine electronics. All components together raise the power output to 560 hp (411 kW) at 8,250 rpm. The power increase of 30 hp / 22 kW boosts the top speed by about 6 km/h (4 mph) to 320 km/h (199 mph). Another highlight: The sound volume of the modified exhaust system can be adjusted via remote.

The sporty concept of the Edo Gallardo Superleggera is rounded off with 19“ three-piece racing wheels with an artificially-aged cast center-section, hand-polished outer rims and 39 stainless steel screws.

The front wheels are shod in stock-sized or (on request) 245/35 ZR 19 rubber while 305/30 ZR 19 Dunlop Sport Maxx tires are used on the rear axle. With this solution Edo competition enables its customers to reuse the factory tires on their new wheels.

Edo Competition treats the masculine stance of the Gallardo Superleggera to an additional testosterone injection by lowering the suspension by a good 15 mm and through the use of corner-weighting. With these upgrades, the Lambo sticks to the road so firmly and unflappably that it would take an earthquake to upset its poise.

2008 Holden Barina spied

The upcoming Holden Barina facelift has been spied on the streets of Sydney - and it looks very happy to say the least.

Recently released in Europe as the Chevrolet Aveo, the new Barina is the creation of General Motor’s Korean design team.

The exterior changes are more than obvious, sporting a completely new front end design with new headlights, grille and bumper.

The new Barina is expected to make its official Australian debut in the coming weeks.

How many people can you fit into a diminutive smart fortwo?

The amazing answer is 13 following a car cram staged to help celebrate smarts 10th anniversary. Owners and visitors to the annual smart Destination Brooklands event held at Mercedes-Benz World, the UKs leading automotive brand experience centre at Weybridge, were invited to take up the smart-packing challenge.

With the drivers and passengers of 1,200 smarts attending the event there was no shortage of potential participants but the winners proved to be the aptly-named smart car-tortionists, a group of body-bending specialists chosen for their gymnastic feats. They included Iona Luvsandorj, semi-finalist in this years Britains Got Talent TV series.

With remarkable flexibility, a total of 13 contortionists managed to climb aboard the micro smart which measures just 2.7 metres long by 1.6 metres wide, proving that the fortwo is small on the outside and big on the inside.

Said Iona afterwards: The interior of the smart is tardis-like and I think we exceeded the crowds expectations of how many people we could fit inside it.

2009 Pontiac Vibe GT Review

The 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT doesn't win the statuette for enthusiasts' favorite in its category. That honor still belongs to the Mazda Mazda3, which has long delivered world-class driving dynamics that are unmatched in this price segment. Still, the Vibe GT's performance is incredibly engaging relative to most others in its class, and it trumps the 3 when it comes to cargo room and passenger space. The hardworking Pontiac Vibe GT deserves a starring role, but whether it's an ideal pick for you will depend on which attributes you value most in a wagon.

Paired with the optional five-speed automatic transmission, our Vibe GT test car's 2.4-liter engine powers the wagon from zero to 60 mph in an invigorating 8.9 seconds — a fairly impressive showing for its class. Around town, this willing engine makes the GT zippy and acquiescent, allowing it to easily finesse city and freeway traffic like a surfer on the crest of a righteous wave. The Vibe's transmission proves a capable match for this torquey inline-4.

At a combined 19.3 mpg, reported fuel economy is unimpressive, and dips below EPA estimates. Those estimates peg the 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. These numbers trail those achieved by competitors like the Mazda3 and Honda Fit, and mark the GT as somewhat of a laggard in this category.

The artificially low limits of its non-defeat stability control system serve to hamper the Vibe GT's performance in skid pad and slalom testing. On the skid pad, the wagon managed an unspectacular 0.75 g, with abundant body roll. On the slalom, its average speed was a lackluster 59.1 mph. However, our test-driver did note that while the Vibe feels tall through transitions, it never feels dangerous, as its limits are kept in check. When driven less aggressively around town, the GT's steering is reasonably responsive, and the wagon tackles corners with poise.

Pontiac's wagon offers ride quality that manages to be most things for most people. It's taut enough to satisfy those seeking some connection with the tarmac, but not so stiff as to put off those whose mandate is comfort.

2010 Saab 9-4 X spied

If you’re into the spy shot scene you may have noticed some earlier pictures of this car scattered on the web, but our European photographers have just gotten up close and were able to verify – 100% – the true identity of this masked prototype.

We first saw this bodystyle at the Detroit Auto Show, being touted at as the 9-4X BioPower Concept, but Saab is obviously serious about bringing this to the marketplace in a timely fashion.

Codenamed GMT168, the Saab 9-4X will arrive in time for the 2010 model year. Sharing the platform with the upcoming Cadillac BRX, the Theta-Epsilon based Saab will be built in at the Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.

Unlike the U.S. based 9-7X, this will be sold globally. Styling – as you can easily see – will be very close to that of the concept, and powerplants will include a range of gasoline, as well as a new 250-horsepower diesel.

The 9-4X will also offer Saab’s XWD all-wheel-drive system.

BMW X5 hot news

This is the new big-mouthed X5 from Hartge, a firm world-renowned for its subtle tuning programmes for BMWs.

Like the Z3M Coupe or 1-Series, it's built with a whacking great 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet.

The new car, nicknamed Road Runner, is based on the diesel X5 and features a new front spoiler, rear skirt and two-piece side sills.

A modified ECU 'performs absolute miracles', according to Hartge. By which we assume it means boosting power rather than turning diesel into wine.

The 3.0d goes up from 235bhp to 275bhp, while the torque increases from 384lb ft to 443lb ft. 0-60mph comes up in just under 7.4 seconds - a second quicker than the standard car.

A 30mm suspension drop and a set of 22-inch wheels complete the Hartge's mentalism, and if you really, must, honestly have one, it'll cost you around £60,000.

2009 Dodge Zeo Concept Video

Dodge's entry in the 2008 Detroit Auto Show concept sweeps is the new ZEO, a concept that is perhaps the polar opposite of the Viper. The four-door, four-seat sport-wagon has the typical Dodge aggression but, like its partners this year, big eight- and ten-cylinder engines are out the picture. The ZEO is a battery EV with a claimed 250-mile range courtesy of a lithium ion battery pack. It will be interesting to see if this one is a runner like most Chrysler concepts or just a mock-up.

The unison of Italian manufacturer, Maserati and the British fashion house Burberry could never be this hideous. But some stinky rich loser in Saudi Arabia with awful taste has plastered his Maserati Quattroporte in a Burberry plaid gift-wrap paper.

I thought that type of a print only went over fragrance cartons and Burberry handbags, but this dreadful magnum opus seeks to open new gates for future gruesome innovations. The Italian maker shouldn’t turn a blind eye to this horrid attempt at blemishing its scrupulously established reputation.

Nissan FF Hybrid - rumours about sport car

With the reign of the Japanese sports car well and truly on track to make a return, new rivalries are appearing such as the new Honda NSX is to the Nissan GT-R.

The most recent and unique addition to this bitter rivalry is Nissan’s new FF Hybrid sports car - with the Honda CR-Z squarely in its sights.

An entry-level coupe to slot into the Nissan range just below the FR, the 2+2 front-wheel drive FF coupe will feature a hybrid drivetrain, aiming to be both fuel efficient and a spirited drive.

It will be based on the existing Nissan ‘B’ platform as used on the Tiida, and follow on from new styling trademarks established on both the new Maxima and upcoming 370Z.

Lightweight aluminium panels are likely to be used extensively to keep weight below 1100kg, and its possible a flat bottom panel similar to that on the GT-R could be employed to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

It’s expected the FF coupe will be powered by a revised hybrid version of the HR15DE 1.5-litre four cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox.

2009 Toyota iQ spied

We first saw the Concept Car iQ at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and were somewhat confused as to what Toyota was actually thinking. Nonetheless the Toyota iQ will go into production later this year. So it’s no surprise them to find it out and about being tested.

Toyota plans to complete with the Smart fortwo and take a chunk of the compact urban transportation market share.

However unlike the fortwo, the iQ has the capability to seat up to three passengers - and it’s less than three metres in length. Plus you can still fit a child or luggage.

Toyota has spent considerable engineering hours working this on out, but the company believes it will be a success and hailed as a breakthrough in space innovation.

Porsche 911 customers say no to start&stop

Like all automobile manufacturers, Porsche 911 will soon have to deal with the new, and more severe, anti-pollution norms. Many solutions have been thrown up for the moment, not all of which are very orthodox, but one of which could be the adoption of the start&stop system on the noble six cylinder 911. This could see CO2 emissions decrese by about 10 g/km.

2009 Nissan Armada Review

The most famous armada of all time was sent by King Phillip II of Spain to invade England and usurp the heretic Queen Elizabeth. This armada was enormous, formidable and a force to be feared. In the end, though, it vanished into the North Atlantic, a victim of smaller British ships, some unfortunate westerly gales and the scraggly Irish coast. Nissan hopes that its enormous, formidable 2009 Armada doesn't suffer a similar fate, although there are a few westerly gales brewing in the automotive marketplace as well.

Based on the Titan pickup, the Nissan Armada full-size SUV was introduced for 2004, a year that seemed to signal the tail end of the "to heck with fuel economy, big trucks for all!" period. It featured (and still does) several avant-garde styling elements, like its curved roof line, designed to set the Armada apart from its competitors. A refresh conducted last year gave the Armada a more pleasant cabin with smarter ergonomics and much nicer materials. In the top-level LE trim, the Nissan Armada is actually none too different from its Infiniti counterpart, the QX56.

Unlike most of its competitors, the 2009 Nissan Armada is only available with one engine, a 5.6-liter 317-horsepower V8. In addition to brisk acceleration around town and prodigious passing power, the 5.6 allows a 9,100-pound tow rating when properly equipped. We've driven the Armada with and without a trailer and were very impressed by its stamina when hitched up.

Of course, that type of power and the Armada's heavy, boxy body translate into poor fuel economy -- which is subpar even by full-size truck standards. In today's climate of high gas prices, an unstable economy and global warming concerns, Nissan's Armada is entering uncharted choppy waters. And like the Spanish Armada, the full-size Nissan has smaller models conquering its sales as buyers move away from thirsty, large SUVs.

Mind you, such vehicles will always be preferred for serious off-road and towing duties. Although a large crossover like GMC's Acadia is superior for simple people-hauling, it just can't handle the rigors of lugging a Bayliner. However, the Armada's newer rivals from Chevrolet/GMC and Toyota have similar heavy-duty capability and are superior offerings to boot, with a wider choice of engines and a more refined ride.

2009 Lexus RX spied

The current Lexus RX range has been around since 2003 and it’s beginning to show its age. Australia was first introduced to the RX range with the arrival of the RX330 which was followed by the RX350 in 2006. The RX400h currently tops the range. However, Lexus is working on a new RX.

Our sources say the RX will be undergoing a major update for the 2009 model year, with production beginning on the revamped RX in late December this year, with cars expected mid-late 2009.

The “new” RX will measure in a fraction larger. It will still offer a 3.5-litre V6 (203kW & 341Nm), but we’re expecting a new 6-speed transmission to go along with the V6.

The current hybrid car only has 155kW and 288Nm of torque, however insiders say a new 400-horsepower (298kW) hybrid powerplant is expected in the RX by 2010 or 2011.

From the photos it seems that the new RX still looks like one we know now, but no doubt it will be modernised to keep up with current styling trends.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Review

Mercedes-Benz's three-pointed star has long been synonymous with style and prestige, but it has historically taken a backseat to BMW's blue and white propeller as a symbol of driving excitement. This was certainly true of the first-generation SLK roadster, which offered decent straight-line speed and a then-novel folding hardtop but lost points due to its archaic recirculating-ball steering design and generally less-than-sporting demeanor. But when the folks at Mercedes set about redesigning the SLK a few years ago, they had evidently grown tired of playing second fiddle to their Bavarian rival in the minds of discerning drivers. That's the only way to explain the downright frisky performance of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster.

Now in its fourth year of production, the current-generation SLK continues to offer sports-carlike handling, broad-shouldered power and the all-weather convenience of a retractable hardtop. Blessed with numerous updates for 2009, this aging model remains one of the most capable and desirable cars in its class. While purists may be tempted by the standard manual transmission on base SLK300 models, speed lovers of all stripes will be intrigued by the midlevel SLK350's newly pumped-up engine. Boasting 300 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque -- increases of 32 hp and 7 lb-ft over last year -- the already quick SLK350 should be noticeably quicker. Also of note, all 2009 SLKs are endowed with what Mercedes calls a "Direct Steer System," which includes a 25 percent quicker steering ratio and a progressive-effort build-up based on steering angle. Other enhancements include a new 5-inch LCD screen, an in-dash six-CD changer, freshened exterior styling and optional iPod/MP3 connectivity.

None of this comes cheap, naturally, and the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK is one of the most expensive choices for a luxury convertible or roadster. As such, one could also consider the sublime Porsche Boxster as well as less desirable (but less expensive) models like the Audi TT, BMW Z4, Honda S2000 and Nissan 350Z. However, these ragtop models lack the Benz's retractable hardtop, and they would be hard-pressed to match the SLK's classy interior appointments. What really sets the SLK apart, though, is its complete package. In the premium roadster segment, at least, the three-pointed star is now synonymous with performance as well as other, more traditional Mercedes traits.

2009 Audi TT RS

Work is under way to develop the hottest ever version of Ingolstadt’s sports coupe, likely to be badged RS. It promises to be a real alternative to the Porsche Cayman when it goes on sale in late 2008 for around 50 000 Euros.

The TT RS will use a 2.5-litre in-line five-cylinder petrol unit, its first five-pot engine in ten years. Early reports indicate that Audi will boost performance to a hefty 350 hp (261 kW) using twin sequential turbochargers.

All this grunt will be channeled through Audi’s permanent 4WD quattro system and a six-speed manual ‘box, though the DSG dual-clutch system will also be available as an option.

Expect a sporty styling with bespoke wheels, alloy-effect door mirrors, aggressive bumpers, RS-batches on the brakes and sill extensions. Volkswagen’s new 280bhp (209kW) 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine, lined up for a hot version of Volkswagen’s Passat, will be released at the same time in a more refined form, to replace the 3.2-litre V6 currently powering the range-topping TT.

The Antro Solo - Hungary's Eco-Green Car

From the unlikely origin of Hungary comes the Antro Solo, a green driving machine perfect for those who find the likes of the Prius a tad too plain.

Its resemblance to a vacuum cleaner aside, the gas-electric powered Solo incorporates a variety of exciting features, including solar power for short trips, a hardly-there weight of 270 kg (courtesy of carbon fiber and composite materials used in its construction), and pedals for manual battery charging under low-sunlight conditions.

It also boasts a top speed of 87 mph and an ultra-efficient fuel consumption rate of 100 mpg. Seating arrangements are similar to that of the McLaren F1, with the driver sandwiched between passengers on both sides. This eco-cruiser is expected to hit the streets in 2012.

2010 Cadillac BRX Crossover Spied

After mediocre success with its midsize SRX crossover, Cadillac is refocusing its efforts on the growing compact SUV segment. The 2010 Cadillac BRX, or CTX as it may be called, is a smaller two-row SUV built on a modified version of GM's midsize sedan platform.

Caught testing in suburban Detroit, the Cadillac BRX looks as though it will borrow most of its design cues from the Provoq concept shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. The chevron-shaped grille remains largely intact and the overall shape of the greenhouse hasn't changed. With so much camouflage over the rear end it's impossible to tell if the production version of the Cadillac BRX will get the retro tail fin lights in back like the concept; but chances are good.



One element of the concept that's guaranteed not to show up is the Provoq's hydrogen fuel-cell drivetrain. In its place will be a couple of gas-burning V6s and traditional automatic transmissions. They'll send power to the front wheels most of the time, with some power sent to the rear wheels on all-wheel-drive models.

Entry-level models will most likely come with the 2.8-liter V6 currently used as the base power plant in the European CTS sedan. With only 210 horsepower, the 2.8-liter V6 looks more like a nod to fuel economy above all else. For those who can afford the extra gas, a 3.6-liter V6 will be offered as well. It should deliver closer to 300 hp and use a six-speed automatic transmission.

By the time the 2010 Cadillac BRX goes on sale next year, it will have a formidable list of competitors. Similar compact luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class will all be competing for the same buyers. Cadillac needs to deliver more than just a more fuel-efficient SUV; it needs to have standout styling as well. Look for the introduction of the final production BRX at next year's Detroit auto show.

The Gallardo LP560-4 is the successor of the most successful Lamborghini model of all time. Approximately 7100 Gallardo models have left the Sant’Agata Bolognese production plant since its launch in 2003. “The LP560-4 will consolidate this success story,” states Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “It will outclass its predecessor in every aspect; its dynamics are distinctly breathtaking and its design sets new standards. With the introduction of the Gallardo LP560-4, we will consistently continue Lamborghini’s growth strategy”.

The powerful heart of the Gallardo LP560-4 is the new 5.2 litre V10 engine with an output of 560 PS (412 kW) at 8000 rpm. The increase of 40 PS compared with that of the previous Gallardo, and the approximate 20 kilogram reduction in weight, improves the power weight ratio to 2.5 kilograms per PS (hp) and thus enhances performance. The LP560-4 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, its speed at 11.8 seconds is 200 km/h and its top speed lies at 325 km/h. At the same time the new, highly efficient engine enthrals its driver with its direct fuel injection system - “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata”. Despite its clearly increased power, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by a staggering 18 per cent.

The engineers in the Sant’Agata-based Technical Department have also improved traction, handling and stability at high speeds. The redesigned four-wheel drive transmission, the new suspension and the optimised aerodynamics as well as the reduced weight and decreased friction between the components, all contribute to the overall improvements in the vehicle. Thus the Gallardo LP560-4 presents itself as a cutting edge super sports car also suitable for the race-track. The car is also surprisingly suited to long-distance driving and despite its extreme performance capabilities is easy to control whilst maintaining utmost stability.

2009 BMW 5-series spy photos

These spy-shots of the 2009 BMW 5-series represent the clearest look yet at the future design direction of this class-leading luxury sedan. It is the first sight of the latest interpretation of the twin-kidney grille.

This BMW will move away from the polarizing design of the current model. Already under development with the internal codename “F10,” the next-generation BMW 5-series will soften the harder lines of the current E60 with more conventional-looking headlights and a cleaner front-end design.

New European pedestrian safety standards are expected to drastically alter the design of many European cars for the worse, but BMW will not only maintain its classic twin-kidney grille design, it will reduce the length of the front overhang.

As is typical of most recent BMW redesigns, this 5-series will add some space between the wheels by extending the wheelbase nearly 10 centimetres and widening the track.The overall length will grow by less than 2 centimetres, while its height will be reduced slightly and its width increased by a fraction. A set of 17-inch wheels will be the smallest available with 18- and 19-inch wheels optional.

Under the hood, this 5-series is expected to use variations of existing engines in BMW’s line-up. Base power will likely come from a 2.5-litre straight-6 while top-range models will use the current 4.8-litre V8. A wild card could be thrown into the mix if BMW attempts to combine its latest turbo technology with a V8 of slightly smaller displacement. Also in the works is a more powerful version of the M5’s 5.0-litre V10.

2009 BMW M3 Sedan

According to BMW, the M3 sedan will be priced under the Coupe model, too. The engine is shared with its two brothers, producing 309 kW and 400 Nm of torque, not that we are complaining because when you can redline a V8 at 8,400 rpm you know you have something very special! So special in fact, that it will go from 0-100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, using an unbelievably low 11.9-litres of fuel per 100 km.

Just like the M3 Convertible, the M3 Sedan will be available with both the conventional six-speed manual gearbox and the all new seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic.

“The refined, engaging performance and handling, the five-seat practicality, and the unique visual appeal of the M3 are sure to make it a winner. Of course the concept of a light-weight V8 engine in the already agile and perfectly balanced 3 Series Sedan guarantees a stimulating drive each time you climb in.” Noble said.

Despite the four doors and five seats, it’s by all means, still an M. Easily recognisable by its aggressive front mask (slightly different to the coupe), bulging bonnet with air intake grilles, mudguard gills, sport side sills, rear air diffuser and of course the trademark quad-pack exhaust pipes. The Sedan rides on 18-inch light alloy M design wheels and hugely powerful brakes.

Despite the obvious similarities between the standard 3-series and the M3, BMW says between 70 and 80 percent of the M3 Sedan is unique, which explains why the M3 is regarded worldwide as a race-bred sportscar in road car drag.

2009 Honda NSX spy photos

Well, we all knew Honda wouldn’t let Nissan and Toyota enter the supercar market without some serious competition. Unlike the previous mid-engined NSX this prototype is running a front-mid engine, with its powerplant placed well behind the front wheels to ensure excellent weight distribution. This should also allow the new NSX to offer 2+2 cabin accommodation, broadening its appeal – particularly in the USA. What that engine is remains very much rumours and conjecture. There’s talk of a high-revving naturally aspirated V10, which would fit in very comfortably with Honda’s Type R philosophy.

Honda’s not as obsessed as many by big horsepower outputs, but even so an output of 450 hp seems likely. Should such an engine be fitted to the sort of lightweight body as the previous NSX, the performance would be exceptional.

Four-wheel-drive, with rearward bias, is also rumoured, the handling expected to be controlled by a version of Honda’s electronic Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

However we are not expecting much until 2009, Honda’s supercar is aiming to compete against rivals like Porsche’s 911 Turbo, the Ferrari F430 and the Lamborghini Gallardo as well as home competition like Nissan’s GT-R and Lexus LF-A.

The 2009 Lincoln MKS is new for Ford’s upscale brand, though its basic running gear links it to a large family of Ford products, including the new Volvo S80, as well as the current Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, and Volvo XC90.

The 2009 Lincoln MKS's distinctive styling sets it apart from its close kin. The MKS is the first production Lincoln to use the division's new grille design, which the company previewed on the MKS and MKT auto show concept vehicles.A new 275-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 powers the MKS. The engine performs adequately, with a high degree of smoothness and little noise or fuss. While premium fuel is required to hit the 275-hp mark, using regular fuel delivers a still healthy helping of horsepower with no change in fuel economy (17/24 mpg for front-wheel drive and 16/23 mpg for all-wheel drive).

The new Lincoln's six-speed automatic is seen in other Ford products such as the Edge, but has been thoroughly recalibrated for this upscale installation. In the MKS, the transmission includes a sport mode as well as manual shift capabilities. Throughout the hills of Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C., with the transmission in the sport setting, the gearbox shifted aggressively. Its performance was close to anticipatory and did an excellent job of keeping the Lincoln in the right gear at the right time—just what an automatic transmission should do.

Pricing starts at around $38,000 for a front-wheel-drive MKS without any fancy options—but including standard features as heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, Ford’s SYNC entertainment system, and HID headlamps—and runs up to $46,000 for a decked-out, all-wheel-drive edition.

HSV W427 on sale in August

It is finally confirmed, the HSV W427 is coming in August and will cost $150,000, plus on road costs, under the current Luxury Car Tax regime.

Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) has just issued a press release announcing the program for the seven litre W427 program, including pricing, volume and distribution strategy.

Not surprisingly, only 427 W427s will be built, however all will be built to order at the Clayton production facility. HSV will give each Australian and New Zealand HSV Dealer (64 in total) one W427 (as long as they have a firm retail order) while the rest will be allocated to dealers based on 2007 sales figures.

The all important figures? Tom Walkinshaw has just confirmed the final power output figure for the W427 will be 375kW and 640NM of torque.

From the outside you can tell its a W427 thanks to its all new exclusive front fascia, all new 3 piece rear spoiler in carbon fibre and all new 20 inch wheels.The interior is treated with HSV E series performance seats in full red hot trim with W427 logo plus HSV steering wheel, gear shifter and console lid in full red hot leather trim.

Suspension is also different over the GTS with the new springs being 30% stiffer than the GTS, while the car sits 20mm lower than GTS as well. The rear gets stiffer suspension bushing, plus HSV has had to rework the Magnetic Ride Control calibration to suit new springs, ride height and bushing.

The W427 comes to a stop using 6 piston front braking system (50% increase in pad area) with 2 piece floating front rotors (380 x 35mm) compared to 365 x 32mm one piece on GTS.

Honda Launches Auto-Max Railcar Fleet

This is just the kind of car company that Honda is. Sure, it sinks tons of R&D into its automobiles so they go faster, handle better, feel nicer and get better fuel economy, but while they're at it, the good folks at Honda also do things like build jets and revolutionize rail transport. That's right, along with cars and planes, Honda has worked its magic on trains and developed the Auto-Max railcar. You see, Honda transports 82% of all its soon-to-be-sold autos via rail in the United States. Why? Because it's more "environmentally responsible" than using trucks. Well, Honda had an issue with current bi-level rail cars outfitted to transport vehicles because they can only hold 10 cars and operate for 20 years.

So Honda did what it does and developed the Auto-Max, which will hold 22 cars and run for 50 years. And now its got a fleet of 400 operating in the U.S. The Japanese automaker also upgraded the rail infrastructure around its Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio assembly plants so trains can pull in and out faster and shipments get on their quicker. Being from Ohio, I can tell you that this state really is the heart of it all when it comes to rail, so it's not surprising that Honda has taken advantage of this shipping method to save some cost and look a little more green. We can't wait to see what the Auto-Max Si can do.

As an official sponsor of the skateboard-'n'-music festival, Kia's hawking its wares at most stops along the nationwide tour, including what seems to be a production-intent Soul hatchback.

We say "seems to be", for in the interest of retaining some suspense for the Paris show, Kia's lightly disguised the Soul for its appearances at the Tour. Painted in silver, the Soul slated for display sports checkerboard-print tarps over its front and rear fascias, obscuring just enough detail to raise curiousity. Likewise, the windows to the Soul's interior have been deep-tinted to the point of obscuring any glimpse of what's inside.

Although the Soul's set to go on sale in the U.S. in early 2009, the Warped Tour begins June 20th in Pomona, California.

2008 Fiat 500 by Tracey Emin

It has to be the most expensive Fiat 500 in the world – and at Ј200,000, it turned out to be one of the star lots at an amazing fund-raising charity auction in London last week.Generous donors from the ARK (Absolute Return for Kids) charity raised an incredible Ј25 million for children at a gala reception in the Royal Naval College, Greenwich on Thursday (5 June) with an auction which included the iconic Fiat.

It wasn’t just any 500 though. This was one of four specially designed and painted examples of the supermini which took the art world by storm last year, designed and painted by acclaimed English artist Tracey Emin. The work, entitled ‘Dark, Dark, Dark’, was among lots which included diamonds, a safari holiday, a speaking role in actress Uma Thurman’s next film, Eloise in Paris, use of a luxury yacht, fashion pieces and other works of art.

“We were very pleased with how the car was received,” says Charlotte Locks-Moro, the charity’s event executive. “The Ј200,000 it raised is not only an amazing amount of money for a car, but it was also a significant sum towards the total we raised for charity. We are absolutely delighted.”

More than 1,200 guests attended the auction, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair, the actress Uma Thurman and model superstar Liz Hurley.

ARK is a charity organisation made up of financial institutions, including City hedge funds, and personal donors. It raises millions of pounds every year for good causes in areas such as tackling HIV in Africa, children in care in Eastern Europe, and inner city education in the UK.

The first of the Tracey Emin-designed cars, called ‘I Told You Not To’ went under the hammer for Ј42,000 last October during the Contemporary Art Auction in London.

2009 Acura TSX Review

For some reason, car enthusiasts love throwing this out when it comes to a redesigned model. It's an unusual (and often faulty) way of showing off supposed automotive acumen; an offshoot of the "they don't build 'em like they used to" attitude. Having said that, the 2009 Acura TSX may not be worse than its predecessor, but we're not sure it's improved.

The TSX basics remain. Acura's entry-level model is a front-wheel-drive sedan with a high-revving four-cylinder engine, taut handling, a spacious cabin and class-leading feature content. Some thought Acura would use the turbocharged engine from its RDX, a small SUV, this time around, but instead it chose to just slightly revise the normally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-4 to produce a bit more low- and midrange power -- a decision that could prove to be a potential liability. With 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, output is certainly adequate and now more useful in everyday driving, but shoppers keen on spicy acceleration will find more to like from turbocharged or V6-powered competitors. Given that the fuel economy is also only a hair better than the related (and heavier) Honda Accord's 268-hp V6, it seems Acura missed the opportunity to get a jump on competitor vehicles that provide similar power and fuel economy to the TSX.

There are a few areas where the TSX has gone backwards. The new electric steering isn't as communicative as the old hydraulic system. Styling, while subjective, is not as streamlined as the original "flying wedge" design -- the new TSX has bulges and creases and a chrome grille mustache, all of which try too hard to mask an otherwise mundane sedan. Inside, the TSX's previous touchscreen electronics interface (good) has been replaced with a multipurpose knob with a multitude of buttons (bad). Thankfully, the intuitive voice commands remain.

Still, while some of these models may be faster, more luxurious, more fuel-efficient, better-handling or less costly than the TSX, few (if any) offer such a solid mix of it all. The problem is, the '08 edition did that too, and car buyers were still looking elsewhere. The 2009 Acura TSX just doesn't raise the bar high enough. In fact, it barely budges it. In other words, "the last one was better."

The 2008 Audi A4 has been a long-time favorite of editors from TheCarConnection.com. In Avant wagon and sedan body styles, the Audi A4 is a great performer wrapped in a practical package. The current generation of A4 was new in 2005, and a new version is due for the 2009 model year—just around the corner.

To keep up interest in the current A4, for Audi, 2008 is the year that the company makes the more aggressive S-package styling standard on the A4. The look is bolder, with different front and rear fascias. Most everything else is carryover, and that’s not a bad thing, since the 2008 Audi A4 is a tastefully designed sedan with one of the auto industry’s best interiors.

The two body styles of 2008 Audi A4 are available with either front-wheel or quattro all-wheel-drive. Power comes from a choice of four and six-cylinder engines. Standard is a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection in-line four that generates 200 horsepower; the optional 3.2-liter V-6 is borrowed from the larger A6 and likewise uses direct injection to produce 255 horses. The four-cylinder can be mated to either a six-speed manual or Multitronic continuously variable (CVT) automatic transmission in the sedan version; the wagon and all V-6 models offer a choice of the six-speed manual or a conventional six-speed automatic gearbox. The V-6 sedans and wagon include a standard sunroof and all automatic-equipped A4s get F1-style shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Nissan’s capacious family hatchback, the NOTE, now offers even greater variety with the debut of a new special edition and the introduction of a more powerful diesel engine into the mix. Offering supreme value-for money and packed with practical and easy to use additional features, the new five-strong Acenta S line-up slots in between Acenta and the top of the range Tekna grades and starts from £11,995.

Acenta S is offered with all four engine options – 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol and 86 PS and 103 PS 1.5 dCi diesel engines – while the 1.6 can also be specified with an automatic transmission.

Chrysler Cuda Convertible Concept

Maybe the 'Cuda is alive after all. While we have speculated about the existence of one ever since we first heard a hint of the SEMA show car from last year, all we've had to work with since are rumors and sketches of what might be. Well, today at the weekly Cars and Coffee show in Irvine, a genuine 'Cuda Concept was parked right in the midst of everything. A convertible nonetheless. It just sat there with only a few people really spotting it for what it was.

Considering that real original '70s 'Cudas are plentiful at this show and that several Challenger SRT-8s have already made appearances, it doesn't seem surprising that people might not spot this concept immediately. The surprising part is that it is painted purple with a white convertible top that can't be ignored no matter how hard you try. While the car sported no badges, it wore a mock "NEWCUDA" Colorado plate and had a seemingly stock Challenger-like interior, complete with a Hurst pistol-grip shifter for the automatic trans. While many of the details emulate the 70-74 cars, the bulk says Challenger. Particularly fun is the grill and headlight setup and the Shaker hood scoop. Very nicely done. The only badge we spotted was a big G on the front fenders, the mark of Metalcrafter's Gaffoglio boys. Looks like we have a SEMA '08 preview on our hands.

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible preview

The new Chevrolet Camaro already has a place in the Australian market if GM ever decide to sell it locally, filling the void left by the Monaro’s departure.

However unlike stillborn Monaro concepts of the past, Chevrolet has revealed a sneak peek of the new pre-production Camaro Convertible.

Holden has previously tested the waters with a drop-top V8 Coupe in the form of the 2004 Holden Marilyn concept - basically a convertivle Monaro.

This presumably didn’t fair too well with the accounting department as it obviously never saw production - maybe it was the name?

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Supercar by Modern Muscle

(from Performance West Group) This vehicle has been equipped with a full chassis by Modern Muscle. They call a vehicle built this way a "Super Car."

The chassis features Corvette C5 aluminum suspension at all four corners, including independent rear suspension and the C5 differential. Handling is on par with a C5 Corvette, which is light years ahead of a stock first generation Camaro. The top features a subtle chop, which is really a significant task on a convertible, since all of the top bows must be altered accordingly, and must still function for raising and lowering the top. Another interesting item on this is the electronic stack injection, which enables the classic Chevy big block to, quite literally, start with the push of a button. It starts easily on the first turn, and idles incredibly smoothly. Also note how the hood is electrically actuated and swings forward with the touch of a button on the console, or the integrated spoiler on the decklid. In short, the more you look at this Camaro, the more custom touches you discover.

Pinstripe Ferrari

German tuning alchemists NoviTec Rosso have joined forces with custom chopper builder Walz Hardcore Cycles to produce this, a Ferrari F430 with pinstriping, a 707bhp twin supercharged engine and a chalkboard black paintjob.

Inspired by a conversation between NoviTec boss Wolfgang Hagedorn and chopper builder Marcus Walz, the F430 TuNero is, to quote Spinal Tap, 'none more black'. It has matt black bodywork, black calipers, black interior and black seats.

Underneath, the TuNero has a pair of superchargers, air-to-water intercoolers, a revised intake system and oil coolers and new injectors. Maximum power is an Enzo-humbling 707bhp at 8350rpm and 525lb ft of torque at 6300rpm.

As you expect, performance is brisk. 60mph comes up in under 3.5 seconds, and flat out the TuNero reaches 216mph. The TuNero is a one-off, but NoviTec will build a similar car for around £300,000.

Walz build custom choppers for F1 champ (and tat-fan) Kimi Raikkonen. We’d imagine this is exactly the kind of car that party-boy Kimi would drive to the local shops to get a pint of, erm, wholesome milk.

Ford Wrenches on 2009 Focus RS for Europe

If you're anxiously awaiting the (European) return of the Focus RS, you're in luck. Not only is the official launch, slated for the 2008 British Motor Show, only a month away, but Ford has also released official "spy" photos of the hot hatch hitting the Nurburgring.

We've not seen an RS model since 2003, as it disappeared when Ford launched an all-new European Focus in 2004. Although a performance-tuned ST model is currently offered, the new Focus RS promises to stuff even more performance into the three-door hatch.

From what we can glean from these photos, the car does resemble the Focus ST coupe, but select cues set the performance-tuned RS apart from lesser trims. We can't help but notice the oversized wheel flares wrapped around large-diameter rolling stock (possibly 19-inch alloys). And there's the matter of that front fascia; yes, it does look more rounded than a base Focus, but we see an intercooler lurking behind a large grille opening.

Although Ford is mum on the exact details, we're told the RS will use a modified form of the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline five-cylinder found in the Focus ST (and Volvo C30). Ford suggests that in RS form the motor will produce more than 276 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque - a significant boost over the ST's 225 hp and 235 lb-ft figures.

Although the RS may play in the same league as Subaru's Impreza WRX STI or the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, we're not looking for Ford to roll out an all-wheel-drive Focus anytime soon. Instead, the RS will deliver power through the front wheels, aided by a limited-slip differential and by suspension tuned on the 'Ring.

We'll know more about what Ford tweaked for the RS in late July, when the car makes its debut in London. Expect production cars to go on sale in early 2009, but don't expect the RS - or any European Focus - to come Stateside. Perhaps you're out of luck.

Paris 2008 first shots of the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback

From Mitsubishi’s press release, the new Lancer Sportback, with a decisive take on hatchbacks, will be presented at the Paris show on October 2 and will reflect the lines of the Lancer Prototype S seen at Geneva.

The car is a five-door job with a sloping roof that will be offered in various versions, including the sports model Ralliart, one step below the Evo in terms of pure performance.

Two petrol engines will be available for the European market, a 1.5 109 hp and a 1.8 143 hp, together with a 2.0 turbo-diesel at 140 hp. The Lancer Sportback Ralliart will have a 2.0 turbo engines at 240 hp and 343 Nm, combined with the Twin Clutch SST transmission and ACD active differential.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V

“At just under 4.0 seconds from 0-100km/h and a 12 second quarter-mile, Cadillac’s CTS-V is the world’s fastest production sedan and we can’t get enough of it”

With 415 kW and a crazy good 747 Nm torque at 3800rpm, a stock standard CTS-V running factory-spec road tyres demolished the world’s most dangerous race track known as Nurburgring, or “The Ring” as known by enthusiasts, in the stunning time of 7: 59.32.

Whilst the ‘time’ is truly staggering for a four door family sedan, what is even more impressive is the consummate ease with which this car handles such a demanding and dangerous track. (see video)

Apart from a new generation of GM’s Magnetic Ride Control which is said to offer drivers, a far wider choice of suspension settings from extreme on track capability to smooth highway cruising luxury, and everything else in between, there’s also a new automatic box with a fast paddle shifting option.

While GM Premium Cars is bringing the less powerful 3.6-litre V6 to Australia in fourth quarter 2008, we can only beg the GM chiefs to please ship a few of these super taxis down here too.

Jaguar XJ Diesel still Britain’s Greenest Luxury car

“For a proper luxury car to achieve 1000.2 miles (1609kms) on a single tank of diesel is simply remarkable. It’s enough to make you want to buy one”

The 2.7-litre diesel engine in the Jaguar XJ series is a robust powerplant which can move the car along rapidly if need be, but at the same time, is capable of achieving a mind-blowing 53.5mpg (4.4-L/100kms).

I mean we are not talking about a frugal little 5-speed manual four cylinder bread box but rather one of the most luxurious cars in the category with an interior more akin to a five star hotel fit out, than a four door sedan.

Moreover, the big Jag’s CO2 emission count of 139g/km is so low for a car of these dimensions I had to re-examine the calculations. Again this level of carbon pollution is more like what you would expect of a small econobox, than a lavishly appointed flagship model in the large car category.

Incidentally, the diesel engine is a twin turbo unit and the entire car is made from aluminium, but still weighs in at 1659kg. And it’s not slow either. How’s 0-100km/h in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 225km/h.

2009 Skoda Fabia Super 2000

This is the car Carlos Sainz was behind the wheel of in Austria, and its based on the second generation Fabia.

Under the bonnet of this sizzling little Skoda is a two-litre turbo-free four-cylinder petrol engine making a serious 280bhp. It’s mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission and a 4WD system, with three mechanical differentials.

We can only hope that Skoda produces a warmed up version of the standard Fabia once it starts selling in Australia. Knowing how the head of Skoda Autralia likes to launch his cars on race tracks, I’d like to think there is every chance.

2009 BMW M3 facelift spy photos

The disguising is almost gone, and now it’s clear: the midlife facelift prepared for the BMW 3 series saloon and estate will be given to the M3 as well – even to the four-door variant snapped here.

The front fascia will be slightly re-designed with a new bumper, modified fog lights and a differently sculpted bonnet. And there will be new tail lamps, too, plus we expect an updated cabin and emission-optimised engines.

The BMW M3 goes head to head with the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 and will soon have some tough competition from the Lexus IS-F as well as the soon to be announced new Audi RS4. The car will be officially unveiled at the Paris Show in October.

2009 Scion tC Review

If you want a recipe for a strong-selling car for the coveted 20-to-30-something demographic, ask Scion. Take a solid platform with a well-tuned suspension and a strong engine, add in plenty of standard features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, a sunroof and a nice stereo, wrap it all up in a smartly attractive coupe-styled body and give it bargain pricing, and you have the 2009 Scion tC.

Having a sense of balance is always a good thing, and the Scion tC exhibits that virtue by providing fairly athletic handling along with a compliant ride. Rather than a high-winding engine that requires a lot of revs to extract the performance, the tC employs a big-for-the-class 2.4-liter four that furnishes strong low- and midrange power.

Another ace in the tC's hand is its relatively upscale cabin and accommodating rear seat. The former features high-quality materials and tight build quality, while the latter has enough room for two adults, a rare luxury in the compact sport coupe segment.

Although the 2009 Scion tC is well equipped, there are still a number of dealer-installed accessories, including a choice of wheels, body kits, stereo head units and interior accents, that can tailor the car to your tastes. Should you hunger for more excitement, your friendly Scion dealer can also hook up your ride with a supercharger that boosts horsepower up to 200 and puts the tC in closer competition against the Civic Si coupe, Mini Cooper S and Volkswagen GTI. Be forewarned that the supercharger is rather pricey, especially when you factor in the cost of having it installed at your Scion dealer.

In its basic form, however, the tC still represents a solid pick for an under-$20,000 sport coupe. True, it's not going to be able to keep up with the aforementioned competitors in a straight line, and its overall design is now a bit dated, having come out for 2005. But for hatchback or coupe shoppers wanting a little bit of everything without paying too much, it would be foolish to overlook the 2009 tC.

One Of The Most Exclusive Rolls Royce Phantom IV up for sale

Well, rub your eyes. We are not talking about Rolls Royce Phantom VI but the Rolls Royce Phantom IV. This 'Rolls Royce of Rolls Royce' belonged to Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II younger sister, Countess of Snowdon is now on sale. The Rolls Royce Phantom IV is labeled as one of the most exclusive Rolls Royce in the world because the public was not allowed to buy this model; it was only sold to the Royalty or a Head of State. A total of 18 examples were made, out of which this went to Princess Margaret in 1954.

No word on what kind of mileage this pristine 1954 Phantom IV H.J. Mulliner Limousine gives. However, it does have a lot of room and a sunroof in the back. Special. It's great because it comes with a 4 bottle drinks cabinet, two for Gin and two for Scotch.

Kia Cee’d Plus spy photos

The European photographers snapped this new Korean car in the Swiss Alps a few days ago but admittedly had no clue as to what the car could actually be. The registration and camouflage clearly said “Hyundai” or “Kia” – but which model?

Not to worry – we found out at last! A former Hyundai designer told us this:
“I’m actually fairly certain that this isn’t the next [Kia] Picanto. It’s hard to tell scale from the pictures, but the car looks to upmarket to be a Picanto. It seems to have a panorama roof plus five-lug wheels that Kia or Hyundai never use on vehicles that small!”

In regard to the size I’d say it’s the Hyundai SO of which a concept will be shown at the Paris show and which is a C-segment small MPV for Europe replacing the Matrix. But the camouflage and grille speak for Kia rather than Hyundai, so I reckon it’s the Kia version of the SO. I don’t know anything about it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Kia was developing such a car given the segment’s popularity in Europe.”

We agree and believe the car is going to be a competitor to the Volkswagen Golf), probably using the Cee’d name - so for now, we will call it the Cee’d plus.

The Scorpion Hybrid Supercar

It's red, it's sleek, it's the Scorpion from the newly formed Ronn Motor Company. It's main features include the fact that it goes from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and gets 40 mpg. So what's so special about that? How about the fact that it's also a hydrogen burning hybrid?

I'm no mechanic (couldn't be farther from it, actually) engine works really interesting. This car sounds like a really satisfying way to satisfy both a need for speed and an interest in preserving the planet (too bad it looks like a refurbished Viper). The Scorpion will be manufactured in Texas and should be available to consumers this fall.

BMW GINA Light Visionary Model

The key to affecting the development of tomorrow’s mobility lies in our readiness to challenge what is established and in the ability to present new options. In order to meet these objectives, BMW Group Design taps into the potential of the GINA principle (Geometry and Functions In “N” Adaptions) which promotes innovative thinking by allowing maximum freedom of crea-tivity. GINA produces dramatically different solutions that affect the design and functionality of future cars. The GINA Light Visionary Model is an optical expression of selective, future-oriented concepts which provide an example of the manner and extent of this transformation.

The body consists of only four elements. The largest component extends from the front of the vehicle to the edge of the windscreen and down the sides to the rear edge of the doors. The large side panels start at the front where the rocker panels emerge and run across the rear wheel arches into the rear. The fourth component is the central rear deck element.

The innovation of a flexible outer skin breaks new ground in automotive engineering. This revolutionary solution opens up new design, production and functionality potential. It has a major impact on the interaction between driver and car and enhances it by offering a variety of entirely new options. Some elements of the substructure are moveable. The driver can move them by means of electro and electro-hydraulic controls. This will also change the shape of the outer skin, which can thus be adapted to suit the current situation, the driver’s requirements and can also enhance the car’s functional range.

BMW Group Design uses concept cars such as the BMW concept car CS1 of 2002 as a step on the way towards putting a particular vision into practice. The CS1 was the first to present features such as the basic principle of the innovative control system – the BMW iDrive. Independently from all other innovative features shown by this concept car, the iDrive has become a series production feature. Similarly, the GINA principle gave rise to an innovative manufacturing method that allows the manufacturers to decorate outer skin components that have been preformed by conventional methods with indi-vidually configured, high-precision contour lines prior to their reintegration into the manufacturing process.

2009 Cadillac XLR and XLR-V

(from General Motors Press Release) Since its inception in 2004, Cadillac's XLR has been a fresh face in the elite club of the world's finest luxury roadsters. Today Cadillac revealed the new 2009 edition of the XLR Roadster, featuring styling and model enhancements providing more dramatic design and technology.

The 2009 XLR includes a new front fascia, new rear fascia and new side fender vents. The revised design is inspired by the award-winning CTS sport sedan, delivering more detail and aggressiveness to Cadillac's roadster. The front fascia includes new fog lamps and specific upper and lower grilles for the Platinum and V-Series models. Also, both '09 models feature the distinctive hood with a raised center section that was previously exclusive to the V-Series.

2009 Bentley Continental Flying Spur

(from Bentley Press Release) With typical Bentley understatement the styling of the new Continental Flying Spur is both evolutionary and subtly effective. At the front, the new bright chrome radiator grille, now more vertical, has a more pronounced square edge, accentuating the distinctive Bentley profile.

Beneath the grille, the new lower bumper features a wider, bolder central air intake. The black matrix grille also provides a 14 percent increase in airflow for the more powerful Speed version and the charge cooler intakes are positioned on the corners. The lower grilles may also be specified in bright chrome to complement that of the main radiator. Chromed bezels around the headlamps complement the new frontal design.

At the rear, the new bumper with black lower valance and wraparound chrome trims make for a more slender appearance that is complemented by new chromed tail lamp bezels. Director of Design, Dirk van Braeckel explains the styling evolution:

“The Flying Spur is instantly recognisable on the road and we were keen to retain its individuality. The subtle styling changes have given the car a fresh look at the front and sleeker, more balanced appearance at the rear.”

At the heart of the Continental Flying Spur is Bentley’s 6-litre, twin turbocharged W12 engine, the most compact 12-cylinder engine in production. The 48-valve head employs four camshafts and continually variable valve timing. Power is transmitted via an uprated ZF six-speed automatic transmission. The W12 engine continues to produce 552bhp (560PS/412kW) at 6100 rev/min and a maximum torque of 650Nm (479lb ft) from 1600 rev/min across virtually the entire rev range. In common with all Continental models, the Flying Spur employs a complex four-link suspension at the front and a trapezoidal multi-link system at the rear.

Additions to the 2009 Flying Spur palette include two new hide colours (Linen and Imperial Blue) as well as three new standard exterior paint colours (Havana, White Sand and Onyx). Four unique duo-tone paint combinations (Havana, Dark Sapphire, Onyx and Midnight Emerald) are available for the first time on the Continental family.

2004 Volkswagen Phaeton

Volkwagen's Phaeton is a luxury car for people who prefer to wear their designer labels on the inside of their clothing. If you can afford a hand-built luxury car but don't need to go around with a three-pointed star or a leaping cat or a flying lady hood ornament to proclaim your arrival, then you may find that this VW more than meets your needs.We use the word "more" because the Phaeton offers a luxury car with a 12-cylinder engine for about the price of a V8-powered Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Phaeton comes standard with features such as a navigation system for about what you'd pay for a basic short-wheelbase 7 Series BMW.

Volkswagen is moving upscale and the Phaeton is its new luxury sedan, the flagship of a fleet that in the North American market includes the Golf, New Beetle, Jetta, Eurovan, Passat, and the new Touareg sport-utility. In 1999, the Volkswagen Group ranked sixth in worldwide sales, but subsequently has overtaken Renault/Nissan and DaimlerChrysler and trails only General Motors, Ford and Toyota. The term phaeton dates back to days of horse-drawn carriages, and then was applied for special, coach-built touring cars with custom features. In the case of the Volkswagen Phaeton, most of those custom features are included as standard equipment.

Rumors of the Phaeton being little more than a so-called Passat Plus are unfounded. Nor does the new Volkswagen look like a warmed over Audi A8. The new car has its own design, and that's clear from the moment you see the wide, trapezoidal and chromed grille with six horizontal bars aligned in three couplets as a stage for the large VW emblem.

The V8 has 317 pound-feet of torque while the W12 provides 406, and provides maximum power all the way from 3000 to 4750 rpm. Still, we thought the V8 had a more pleasing exhaust note for those who like to hear their car while it's accelerating from a stoplight. Not that you hear very much sound inside the Phaeton, at least not until you reach speeds of around 110 mph on the autobahn, where you start to get some wind noise around the car's rear view mirrors.

The Phaeton's all-wheel-drive system is shared with Audi's large sedans (not with VW's Touareg SUV) and is designed for on-road traction and safety. The system features a Torsen center differential that normally divides power 50:50 between front and rear axles, but can shift as much as 67 percent of power to the wheels with the greatest grip.

But if you're a small town dentist or banker, you likely can afford a car with a three-pointed star or a blue-and-white propeller emblem, but perhaps you can't afford to be seen driving one, lest your patients think they're being overcharged or your depositors worry that their accounts are being skimmed. Or maybe you're an entrepreneur or executive who has made it, but doesn't need to flaunt it.

2007 mtm Audi TT bimoto

(from MTM Press Release) The mtm Bimoto, probably the most impressive vehicle produced by mtm, is based on the Audi TT and is equiped with two four cylinder turbo-engine. Even the starting performance makes overwhelming driving powers possible. Because of further engine-modifications together is a maximum 1000 HP possible.

The latest project - the mtm bimoto - is one of the exclusive and extraordinary special vehicles of mtm. Once more it shows that the founder Roland Mayer wants more engine power and perfection.

The idea of two engines sounds strange at first, but it has lots of advantages compared with other ideas. To construct a V-8 turboengine for example we would have had to choose a central engine arrangement, which would have required the development of a special and more expensive allroad transmission.

For the drive of his two axles the mtm bimoto has two engines and two transmissions. The slightly changed body of the Audi TT hides more than expected at first sight. Both in front and rear every transmission is driven by its own 1.8 l four cylinder turbo-engine. A partition made of carbon including a rear window separates the maximum two passengers from the second drive unit in the rear. What you can find in it is that almost every aggregate is double of the front one. Likewise there is a manual six gear transmission installed on the opposite of the driven direction which is driven by a 1.8 l cylinder in almost he same axis of the front part. To make power shifts possible double-clutches-transmissions will be obstructed in the new future. A welded cage stabilizes the complete car and includes the both aggregates.

With six-point-belts in Recaro full-bucket seats in future maximally two passengers have the possibility to feel the experience double engine in the exclusive MTM bimoto. The development costs for the prototype are about 600.000 euro. A small series of 10 vehicles is planned. Optionally also a race-suspension and/or race-suspension-parts can be ordered.

2009 Peugeot 308 CC spy photos

After the introduction of the 308 hatchback earlier this year, Peugeot is now going full throttle on the development of the 308 CC, due to hit the showroom mid next year.

Our European photographers snapped prototypes of the future convertible undergoing high-speed testing on a racing circuit in France.

Like its predecessor, the new 308 CC will mimic the hatchback’s front-end design and will get a retractable hardtop that folds in two parts.

Overall length and width won’t differ much from the 3- and 5-door hatchback but credible rumours suggest the CC will be the world’s first car to be offered with a diesel hybrid.

All conventional engines offered for the hatchback, however, will be available for the topless car, too.

Toyota may build more Camrys at truck plant

Automotive times are a-changin, as fuel-efficient cars are now outselling trucks by a wide margin. Toyota's flexible manufacturing capabilities allow it to adjust to these crazy times, and the Japanese automaker is discussing a plan to build still more Camrys at its Indiana truck plant. The Princeton plant is only running two shifts right now, and its trucks and SUVs are suffering just as much as similar offerings coming out of Detroit.

That makes the plant a great fit for the Camry, which sold an astonishing 51,291 units last month. Honda has already decided to increase production of the Civic, which was the top-selling vehicle in the US last month with over 53,000 units leaving the showroom floor.

Japanese art has a way for driving itself into anything and turning up as a perfect blend of ethnic style and feel. The Bentley Continental GT has experience the similar thrill of Japanese art in 29 models of theirs that will be available after a touch is given to them. The hoods of these 29 vehicles will bear designs by Nakamura Tetsuei. The cars have a whopping 800 hp oozing out of them, all thanks to the newly added 6.0L W12 engine to them.

The Bentley could always do with some extra body mods and this kit looks pretty interesting. I still wonder how many people fall for floral designs on sexy super cars these days. I mean, aren’t we over the seventies yet?

The worst part of any investment is paying. Well, if you are investing for a few double takes from people on the road then you can keep the $800,000 ready to blow up on a flowery Bentley.

Pagani Zonda Cinque

“Pagani create carbon fibre masterpieces with four wheels and huge engines by Mercedes Benz AMG. Now, they are have gone one better. They’re building carbon-titanium cars, which are even lighter than any previous models”

When ultra supercar manufacturers build a special edition, the word “special” cannot be emphasised enough. The Zonda Cinque is one of those cars. Just five examples will be built and of course, they are all sold, at a cost of 1million Euro, plus taxes. In Australian dollars, that’s easily two million big ones, and that’s provided, you were lucky enough to find out about the car, and wired your deposit, in time.

All previous Zonda’s have been produced with a conventional gated gear shifter, but the Cinque comes standard with a Cima 6-speed sequential gearbox with paddles, as well as a gear lever on the central tunnel.

Remember, this car is predominately made from a carbon-titanium fibre and is ridiculously light, at 1210kg. So you won’t argue with me, when I say that 678bhp and 780Nm torque, is more than enough. Well, it’s good for a 0-100km/h sprint in 3.4 sec, and flat out, she’ll do over 350 km/h.

Carbon fibre steering wheel, Carbon fibre racing seats by Toora and covered in leather, APP monolitic forged wheels from aluminium and magnesium – 335/30/20 up front and 255/35/19 down back. Brembo carbon-ceramic, self-ventilated brakes are employed all round. These monsters will pull you up from 200-0 in a staggering 4.3 seconds!

Lamborghini Gallardo for the Italian Cops

When the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Grand Tourer was all set to appear in special Police livery at Salon Privé's Private and Luxury Super Car Show, little did we know that cops in Italy would find lucky donations in the form of a Lamborghini Gallardo. The Italian State Police (Polizia di Stato) has received the donation from Automobili Lamborghini SpA. The V10, that boasts of 500 bhp, 190 mph, features colors of the state police and includes a siren and flashing lights on the roof.

The traffic police gets the honor of using the Gallardo, which will be used during emergency situations on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway in southern Italy. It's been fitted with all the gadgets necessary to transmit critical info during road traffic accidents, fires and other disaster situations. It will also feature the Italian police's Provida system which records traffic violations and sends images in real-time, and has a direct connection to the police database as well as the Elsag 'Autodetector' system for number plate recognition.

The Gallardo is also equipped with first aid equipment including defibrillator apparatus with the capability to perform electrocardiograms, and automatic diagnosis of arterial pressure and the presence of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Apparently the cops could even use to transport plasma and human organs for transplant.

During the winter season, Gallardo's permanent four-wheel drive, will also sport special 'Sottozero' snow tires developed by Pirelli for Lamborghini.

Chrysler Jeep Renegade Concept

Chrysler has a fair few concept cars and this one is apparently the third release in the way of final sketches, below we have a few images for you to look at. Before I go into the car itself, does anyone think that the Jeep Renegade Concept looks like Chief Spartans car from Halo 3 game?

This vehicle was shown off at the Detroit Auto Show in January, now you are wondering why the heck we are publishing about it now, well the reason we are is because many people may have missed this little beauty. The Jeep Renegade Concept has been designed to be rugged, you know something that can take a beating or two, it is a B-segment-sized two-seat eco-friendly vehicle that is capable of dune surfing and off roading.

Those who love the world to be green will love the fact it uses minimal materials and has a hybrid drive train, it is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack which has a 40-mile range, and it can be recharged by a small onboard BLUETEC diesel engine. The combined mileage of the hybrid system is said to be 110 mpg.

2008 MTM Audi S5 GT Supercharged

Motoren Technik Mayer from Wettstetten, Germany, puts the Audi S5 under pressure. As “MTM GT Supercharged” the sporty coupe’s supercharged engine demonstrates impressive performance data. Together with bigger brakes, a coilover suspension and other minor changes, the result is an overall package which can take on the race track.

Curve-hugging and agile
MTM equipped its GT Supercharged with a perfectly tuned coilover suspension and in addition amended the axle geometry with higher camber angles. After the change, its driving dynamism and curve-hugging characteristics are so pronounced you never want to drive straight-ahead again. The steering characteristics are more precise and the agility enhanced, while road handling remains quite neutral.

The small difference
Optically the GT Supercharged does not look very different from the series model. Here MTM has gone in for understatement. The eye-catching wheels are available in “shiny silver”, “titanium” and “diamond cut” finishes. 2008 Kicherer Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG

(from Kicherer Press Release) The prevailing notion that sports cars are just a pleasure for two was now contradicted by Kicherer. The renowned Mercedes embellishing specialists from Stockach have enriched the CLK 63 AMG, which is actually a two-seater, with a sporty back seat. When you take the north loop in less than 8 minutes with this bolide, all those seats will defnitely provide more fun – and adrenaline – than any rollercoaster.

The radiator grill, already quite impressive on the standard version, is replaced by an even sportier variant made of carbon and featuring carbon fibre struts. The beautiful forged three-part wheel, Kicherer RS-1, also fulfls a double function as it is a visual and – thanks to weight reduction – also a sportive gain.

The chassis – specially developed for Kicherer by DTM specialist H&R – also improves the racer’s cornering dynamics by several degrees. Since the Kicherer engineers have taken care of the engine, too, they have further underlined their reinterpretation by carbon mirror shells. With its 540 hp, the Kicherer CLK racer gained about 33 hp. Even the torque has been improved by another 20 Nm.

Thus equipped, the Kicherer CLK only needs 4.1 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and runs faster than 300 km/h – thanks to a derestricted V/max. In order to delight any fellow passenger’s vision, Kicherer has equipped the car with additional carbon intarsia.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano catches fire from supercar to hotrod

When we think of Ferrari we think of supercars that has that certain sex appeal, no one makes a fast car quite like the Italians. However it seems as if the prancing horse has a little issue with catching fire, the car this time was a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano which self-ignited when it came to a stop. I would hate to be in the driver’s shoes right now, as it was not even his car. The car was being driven by a worker for Romans International supercar garage in Banstead, UK, while he was driving the dream machine he could hear a strange sound coming from the rear, which was quickly followed by a huge amount of smoke and then the fire.

The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano worth £250,000 is now a write-off, thankfully though the Ferrari was still covered under its warranty. However, this is no consolation to Ferrari owners around the world who must now be wondering if their prized possession will catch alight. You would think that a company like Ferrari would never suffer from any such problem like this, the worrying this is there have been a number of documented cases of these supercars catching fire. I do not understand why Ferrari has not found out why this is happening, many believe that the engine is overheating. Ferrari run one off, if not the best Formula 1 teams so you would have thought that they would have solved this issue by now.

Really Long-Wheelbase Bentley Arnage - Spy Shots

While Bentley continues to achieve sales success with its Continental line of cars that includes the GT, Flying Spur, GTC and new GT Speed, the upper-level Arnage line has been left to get by on its old world charm and bespoke everything hand-built construction. We showed you some spy shots of the next-gen Arnage back in April that suggests Bentley may position the next-gen Arnage as a direct competitor to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, and whether that's the case or not, the next Arnage will most certainly continue catering to the wealthiest 1% of the world.

A super extra long version of the Arnage was recently spotted by KGP photographers with an extra 18 inches of wheelbase, and while Bentley already offers the LWB Arnage RL model, this particular car eclipses that and then some to firmly land in limousine territory. In other words, it's not a car drive, it's a car in which you're driven. Whether this mule is based on the current model or actually hiding some hardware for the next-gen model isn't known, but either way it shows just how interested Bentley has become in attracting the chauffeur-driven crowd.

Porsche’s next generation 911

Porsche has released details of the next generation of 911 sports cars, including a double clutch system, and launch control.

In a press release today, Porsche states that there will be two coupes, and two cabriolets, with new 3.6 and 3.8-litre engines featuring direct injection, and the optional new double clutch gearbox - Porsche-Doppelkupplung, or PDK in Porsche-speak.

The company is claiming that fuel consumption drops to 9.8-litres/100km and CO2 is reduced by 15%.

Maximum output of the new generation 911 Carrera with its 3.6-litre engine is up by 15 kW to 254 kW; while output of the 911 Carrera S with its 3.8-litre engine is up by 22 kW to 283 kW. With this extra power, the Carrera S now offers a top speed of slightly over 300 km/h.

The Carrera with the seven-speed PDK ‘box will go from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds. If you want more punch, option up to the Sport Chrono Plus including Launch Control. This will do the same split in a DBS equalling 4.3 seconds.

2009 Infiniti FX35 and 2009 Infiniti FX50 pricing

Infiniti's cranked up the content levels for the new 2009 FX sport-utility - and accordingly, it's cranked up the pricing. A base rear-drive 2009 FX35 stickers at $40,950 - nearly $2900 more than the outgoing model.

Prices for the other models have also shot upwards; the FX35 AWD now retails for $42,350, a $2800 jump. The new all-wheel drive FX50 - surpassing the outgoing FX45 model with a new 5.0-liter V-8 - starts at a whopping $56,700, nearly $6600 more than the FX45 and just underneath the entry price for a Porsche Cayenne S ($57,900).

Granted, that price does get you a top-end FX with virtually no options. In fact, the only add-ons for the FX50 are a rear-seat DVD package ($1600), a sport package ($3000) (including rear active steering, sports seating and adjustable suspension), and a technology package ($2900), which adds whiz-bang features like intelligent brake assist, lane departure prevention systems, adaptive cruise control and rain-sensing wipers.

FX35 models can also opt for the Technology and Premium packages, but are also open to a premium package ($2350), navigation system ($2850), and a Deluxe Touring package ($2650) - all of which essentially add features found standard on the FX50.

2010 Subaru Impreza Coupe

This is the boy-racer Impreza we all know and love. Subaru has announced it will produce a coupe version of its Impreza hatchback by 2010.

This will be the first two-door Impreza from Subaru in almost a decade, not seen since 399 of the first-generation STi Impreza’s were imported as a two-door exclusively for the Australian market - the 400th fell off the boat.

The coupe takes obvious styling cues from the hatch, but features a much lower slung roof line thanks to the deleted rear doors, and a more aggressive approach on the current Impreza front end.

The engine line-up will be on par with the current range, with a naturally aspirated and turbocharged STi-spec version of the 2.5-litre boxer engine - and thats only if it makes it to Australia.

As earlier reports suggested, the AWD system will be dropped for entry level models in favour of a lightweight, more affordable rear-drive setup.

Opel Vauxhall Insignia first official interior shots

The London show is coming up and the lovely Opel Insignia, heir to the Vectra, continues its striptease: General Motors has released new official photos of the Vauxhall (which will be commercialised in the US as the Saturn Aura), including the first shots of the interior.

It seems that all the first positive impressions we had of the clean lines of the bodywork are confirmed: the interior seems tidy and welcoming, and also well made. In particular the console and intruments are lovely, with the latter changing colour from white to red when passing to ‘Sport Mode”.

Toyota/Subaru Coupe - Spy Shots

AutoExpress may have provided us with a rendering of what the new RWD Subaru coupe might look like, but Winding Road's hired spies have provided the real deal. Shot outside a test center in the UK (amidst white-out conditions), the camo-clad mule is sporting some body panels pilfered from the current Legacy, but with a Toyota emblem in front, a pair of Recaro buckets inside and a shrunken trunk, there's little doubt that this prototype is more than just your standard sedan.

There's still no confirmation about what kind of output the 2.0-liter flat-four will be producing, as estimates have ranged from 180- to 220-hp, but grunt is expected to be shoveled to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and pricing should start a few pennies shy of $20,000.

2010 Porsche Cayenne spy photos

These prototypes photographed are not a smaller brother to the current Porsche Cayenne. Having surfed the web in the last few weeks, many media outlets have incorrectly reported that it could be named the Roxster – but it’s actually the first sighting of the icon itself: the new Porsche Cayenne.

The photos are of two different variants, the standard Cayenne (with square exhaust pipes - first one) and the Cayenne S (with two pairs of round exhausts -second one). The Cayenne was originally released in 2002 and many say it went a long way to improve Porsche’s financial issues. The German powerhouse shares this platform with the Volkswagen Touareg the Audi Q7.

Once again the Cayenne will be the first of the three new SUVs with a release date of about the first half of 2010. Its cheaper brother, the Touareg, isn’t due to make an appearance until late 2010 at the earliest. Germany’s Automobilwoche magazine reports that Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is using his ever increasing control stake of the VW Group to rush projects that would favour Porsche, even if it disadvantages parent company Volkswagen.

The new Cayenne will address fuel efficiency issues with a hybrid and diesel model in the line-up. Yes, hybrid and diesel Porsches are only a few years away.
